Over the past few years danSingers have felt privileged to support numerous charities, helping to raise over £250,000 in the Yorkshire area! We have received invitations to perform at charity balls, fashion shows and The Young Enterprise Awards where we shared the stage with Lenny Henry and Harry Gration.
danSing for Shine, Harrogate Theatre – June 2017
After a Medley of Take That songs from danSing performers, the compères, ITV News Presenter, Christine Talbot, and Shine Patron, Danny Mills, introduced trumpeter, Ed Addo, who had travelled from London especially for the show. Fresh from the National Tour of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, musical theatre artist, Lucy Sherman, gave an outstanding performance of “Beyond My Wildest Dreams” from The Little Mermaid. This was followed by danSing juniors and intermediates who took to the stage in splendid costumes and were joined by soloists, Megan Mead as Mary Poppins and Will Jackson as Willy Wonka.
Next on the bill were Leeds based, The Fabulous Smith Twins with one of their own comedy sketches involving Spiderman and Cat Woman. The Brackenfield School Choir gave an excellent rendition of their wonderful ‘Yorkshire Medley” which had been previously performed at the Tour de Yorkshire. Musical theatre artists, Lydia Bradd and Kitty Watson, demonstrated strong vocals and dance skills and there was a very colourful Bollywood tribute with excellent vocal harmonies from danSing seniors. To close the first half of the show, Ilan Sherman gave the very first performance of his new charity single “All Leeds Aren’t We.”
After the interval dansing students performed a rock medley, joining forces with local rock group Oblivion. Singer, Bethany Hare, enchanted with a lovely performance of “The Impossible Dream.” Swing Time featured a well- rehearsed routine from duo, Sam Daltry and Will Jackson, followed by precise harmonies and slick moves from the Duchy Belles who were then joined on stage by singer, Bradley Johnson. Bradley was a finalist in the BBC’s ‘Let it Shine’ talent show.
Olivia Jackson, who is just about to graduate from the American Musical Theatre Academy in London, performed with dansing alumni, celebrating danSing’s 10th Anniversary Year. Finally, comedy legends, Cannon and Ball, topped the bill. Tommy and Bobby are now celebrating 54 years together and it is claimed that they are the longest running comedy double act in the world.
danSing for Shine was a wonderful showcase for amazing young talent, directed by actress Adrienne Posta, with musical direction and arrangements from Helen Leaf and choreography by Jane Waring and Joe Hodgkinson. Throughout all the performances there was sign interpretation by Vivien Sabel.
Christine Talbot said: “I had a wonderful time co-hosting the Shine show with a lovely group of very talented young people, many of who are destined for great things in music and on stage – a huge privilege.”
Leeds United Charity Single for Shine – March 2017
Singer/songwriter and avid Leeds United supporter, Ilan Sherman, invited danSing performers to sing backing vocals on a recording of his forthcoming Leeds United football song, “All Leeds Aren’t We.” The song, arranged by danSing Musical Director, Helen Leaf, and produced by Dan Goldman of JD73, was recorded by Ilan and the danSing choir at a recording studio in Leeds and is to be launched later in the year. It will also be available to download on itunes. “All Leeds Aren’t We” is being officially endorsed be ex-Leeds and England full-back Danny Mills, one of Shine’s patrons, and Danny appears at the start of the song’s video encouraging people to donate to Shine.
danSing at Christmas, St. Joseph’s Church Wetherby – December 2016
Following on from last year’s festive success, danSing hosted “danSing at Christmas” in support of the charity Bethany’s Smile. International flautist, Simeon Wood, headlined the wonderful, sparkling evening. When not touring, Simeon writes music for television and theatre productions. He has appeared on the Chris Evans Breakfast show and BBC’s The One Show.
Other special guests included Emmerdale’s Matthew Bose, TV journalist and News Presenter, Christine Talbot and singer, Bradley Johnson, who is to appear on BBC’s “Let It Shine.” With musical arrangements by Helen Leaf, the fabulous line-up featured The Duchy Belles vocal harmony trio, musical theatre artists, Coraleigh Hobson-Robinson and Lucy Sherman (Strictly Ballroom, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang), singer and award-winning fundraiser, Bethany Hare, duo, Will Jackson and Sam Daltry (NYMT), readers, Major Cindy Stanford (The Salvation Army) and Pam Leaf, and danSing’s own fabulous aspiring young performers.
The Wedding Ceremony of Lindsey & Stephen, Horsforth – October 2016
danSing seniors and inters performed at the wedding ceremony of Lindsey Smith and Stephen Croft at St. Mary’s RC Church in Horsforth, Leeds. With vocal arrangements by musical director, Helen Leaf, the ensemble sang “Ave Maria”, featuring a beautiful solo from Megan Mead, and “Joyful Joyful” with a heart-felt solo from Penny Bowles. The danSing choir was joined by cellist, Anna Staveley, who performed music for the entrance of the bride. The bride an groom thanked danSing and said that their family and friends were overwhelmed with the performance.
Midsummer Ball, The Old Swan Hotel, Harrogate – June 2016
Following the magnificent “When Love Came Down” Christmas concert in December 2015, The Friends of Alfie Martin Charity invited danSing directors, Helen Leaf and Jane Waring, to create music and movement for their Midsummer Charity Ball on 18th June 2016. Helen arranged a magic medley of songs and music for the danSing seniors and inters which was staged by Jane Waring and dance artist De-Napoli Clarke. danSing also invited the newly formed trio, The Duchy Belles, to perform close harmony songs also arranged by Helen. Talented young cellist, Anna Staveley, serenaded the guests upon their arrival. Fiona Martin, founder of The Friends of Alfie Martin, was delighted with danSing’s performance which helped to raise a staggering £25,000 for neonatal care in the Yorkshire region.
Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebrations, Harrogate- June 2016
On June 12th 2016, danSing entertained in the open air at The Duchy Street Party to celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday. Musical director, Helen Leaf, created a montage of music by popular British rock bands which was performed live by danSing inters and seniors. Co-director, Jane Waring, and dance artist, De-Napoli Clarke, staged danSing’s rock medley which delighted the audience at what was a very successful community event, attended by The Mayor of Harrogate. Close harmony vocal trio, The Duchy Belles, comprising danSing seniors, Alice Wright, Sally Hall and former danSinger, Kitty Watson, performed songs especially arranged by Helen in the style of The Andrews Sisters. Event organiser, Catherine Wright, thanked danSing for helping to raised over £5,000.00 for St. Wilfrid’s Church and for a performance that was “great fun, very professional and enjoyed by everyone.”
The Big T Grand Final, Harrogate Theatre – March 2016
Once again, danSing seniors were grand finalists at The Big T – Harrogate’s answer to Britain’s Got Talent. With pitch perfect harmonies, danSing opened the show performing a medley from The Who’s “Tommy” using a cheval mirror frame as a pinball machine. The group were joined by NYMT actor, Michael McGeough, who played an impressive Tommy, standing in for Josh Belward at the eleventh hour. danSing’s “Pinball Wizard” impressed the audience and celebrity judges including Emmerdale star, Laura Norton.
When Love Came Down, St. Joseph’s Church, Wetherby – December 2015
danSing seniors, inters and juniors played host to a festive charity concert in aid of The Friends of Alfie Martin, a charity run entirely by volunteers which raises vital funds for life-saving care and transportation for critically ill babies in the Yorkshire region. A magnificent £2010.39 was raised for the charity and children in the audience brought Christmas gifts that were donated to the Women’s Aid Charity in Leeds.
Headlining this magical evening was British recording artist Mike Lovatt, principal trumpet with the Grammy Nominated John Wilson Orchestra. Mike has performed with the likes of Quincy Jones, Robbie Williams and Michael Bublé and has also played on movie soundtracks including James Bond and Harry Potter. He was accompanied by international dance pianist David Plumpton who has worked with the dance legends Wayne Sleep and Darcy Bussell. Other special guests for the concert included TV journalist and News Presenter, Christine Talbot and Tempo FM broadcaster, Bill Baker.
The impressive concert line up also featured Music for Youth award winners Brackenfield Junior Choir, musical theatre artists Amara Okereke (NYMT, Artsed) and Lucy Sherman (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Leeds Playhouse), singer and award-winning fundraiser Bethany Hare (Diana Award, Ambassador for Children of Peace and recipient of the Prime Minister’s Point of Light Award), dancer/choreographer Rosie Winter, actor Michael McGeough (NYMT), boy soprano Frankie Bounds (NYMT, Opera North), soprano Megan Mead, readers Pam and Corinna Leaf, danSing’s own aspiring performers and, of course, Father Christmas himself!
Carol Service, The Methodist Church, Kearby – December 2015
danSing soloists, Alice Wright, Amelia Banerjee, Max Tennant and Rachel Roberts took part in a delightful village Carol Service at Kearby Methodist Church. With strong harmonies and expressive solos the ensemble previewed songs from danSing’s forthcoming charity Christmas concert “When Love Came Down”. The congregation were most appreciative and the Vicar thanked danSing for wonderful singing and for supporting the event at such a busy time of year.
danSing for Shine, Harrogate Theatre – June 2015
Aspiring young performers wowed the audience at the Harrogate Theatre on Sunday 21st June in “danSing for shine” a concert hosted by danSing to raise funds and awareness for the national charity, Shine, which is dedicated to supporting people affected by spina bifida and hydrocephalus.
danSing, opened the show with “Shine Medley”, especially arranged for the event by musical director, Helen Leaf. Ex Premiership and England footballer, Danny Mills, compèred the evening. Danny became Shine’s patron after losing his son Archie to spina bifida and hydrocephalus in 2002. Danny was joined by an array of talented guests with Jonathan Ansell, G4s multi platinum selling music artist, headlining the show. Jonathan shared the stage with John Farnworth, world champion football freestyler, Katie Skinner of “Made in Leeds” fame, singer-songwriters Yo Preston, Daniel Webster and Sophie Stott, African drumming group, Belebele, singer and award-winning fundraiser, Bethany Hare, Music for Youth National finalists, Brackenfield School Choir and musical theatre artists Robyn McIntyre, Rosie Winter and Lucy Sherman. With musical staging by Jane Waring and choreography by De-Napoli Clarke, “danSing for Shine” was cleverly directed by eminent actress, Adrienne Posta. The full company received a standing ovation for “You Raise me Up” which provided a fitting finale to a truly memorable and successful evening raising £4,133.47 for Shine.
Christmas Carol Concert, Royal Hall, Harrogate – Dec 2014
Inters and seniors were once again invited to perform at the Royal Hall, Harrogate, in the 2014 Christmas Concert for the national charity, Action for Children. danSingers entertained the audience with musical theatre and gospel songs from stage and screen and renowned dance artist, De-Napoli Clarke, choreographed a high energy street dance as a finale to the danSing performance. The group received super feedback and were thanked by partnership fundraiser, Lisa Morton, for helping to raise funds to support the charity’s work in Yorkshire.
Bethany’s Smile Foundation, Mistletoe & Wine – Dec 2014
danSingers performed at a festive fundraising event for the local charity Bethany’s Smile. Juniors, Phoebe, Jemma, Emily, Amelia and Ella delighted the audience with Christmas songs including “Together at Christmas” especially composed by danSing musical director, Helen Leaf. Inters and seniors combined to harmonise gospel and musical theatre songs. There were super seasonal solos from Sally, Alice, Elle, Jenny and Tilly. danSing were thanked by founder of Bethany’s Smile, Bethany Hare, who has recently been appointed Youth Ambassador for Music for the international charity Children of Peace.
The Big T, Harrogate Theatre – March 2014
danSing seniors were chosen to take part in the grand final of the Harrogate Theatre fundraiser, The Big T. The show took place in front of a packed audience and this diverse and popular event raised over £6,500.00 for the Harrogate Theatre’s renovation fund. Demonstrating fine harmony singing, range of emotion and clever staging, danSing’s talented seniors performed a medley of songs from the hit Broadway show, “Spring Awakening.” Senior, Josh Belward, also performed as a soloist and his vocal skills were described as having “West End quality.”
Christmas Concert in aid of Action for Children, Royal Hall, Harrogate – 6th December 2013
Following danSing’s vibrant performance at last year’s event, the group were invited to appear at the Royal Hall in the 2013 Christmas Carol concert to raise funds and awareness for the charity Action for Children. danSing seniors performed lyrical and upbeat gospel numbers and a medley of Christmas songs arranged for the group by musical director, Helen Leaf. There were fabulous solos from Alice, Amelia, Elin, Sally, Shivani and Faye, and the medley featured a festive duet from Josh and Max. The group were thanked by co-ordinator, Lisa Morton, for helping to raise over £2000, and invited to take part in next year’s event.
110thAnniversary Concert, Royal Hall, Harrogate – 27th May 2013
danSing seniors and juniors were privileged to take part in an Arts Event to mark the 110th Anniversary of the newly restored Royal Hall in Harrogate. Helen and Jane programmed a thirty minute finale to the day of celebration, featuring group musical theatre pieces, solos, duets, and uplifting vocal harmony arrangements. danSing impressed a captive audience which included the Mayor of Harrogate, Coun Michael Newby. It was a day packed full of activities and entertainment and danSing were proud to support this wonderful venue.
Crystal Ball, Ripley Castle – 27th April 2013
Following their impressive performance at La Belle Epoque, 2011, the Crystal Committee invited danSing students to open their Crystal Ball at Lakeside, Ripley Castle on 27th April 2013. Helen and Jane devised a futuristic medley of songs with movement especially for the occasion. danSing had an amazing evening and helped to raise over £80,000 for this year’s nominated charity, Germ Cell Cancer Research at St. James’ Hospital, Leeds. Event co-ordinator, Joanna Fuller, visited danSing in rehearsal to thank everyone for their involvement and award certificates of participation.
Action for Children’s Christmas Concert, Royal Hall, Harrogate – 7th December 2012
A group of danSing students took part in a wonderful charity concert at Harrogate’s Royal Hall on 7th December 2012 and helped to raise £2000 for Action For Children. Selected schools and performing arts groups from the Harrogate area, including danSing, were invited to come together to raise awareness of the charity and support its work. It was a marvellous event and danSing impressed the audience with rousing gospel choruses and inspirational songs. Lisa Morton, the concert co-ordinator expressed her sincere thanks and invited danSing to take part in next year’s event.
Wedding of Amber Cruse, Birstwith – 15th September 2012
On the afternoon of 15th September 2011, danSing voices were privileged to perform at the wedding of Amber Cruse and Ben Hatfield Crosby at St. James’ Church, Birstwith. It was a beautiful occasion and danSing opened the ceremony with “Viva La Vida” and the rousing gospel favourite, “Joyful Joyful”. During the signing of the register Alice Wright sang Grieg’s exquisite song, “Ich Liebe Dich”, and then danSing voices performed a stylish arrangement of “You Raise Me Up”.
La Belle Epoque, Ripley Castle – 14th May 2011
Harrogate’s Crystal Committee organised a Charity Ball in aid of The PPR Foundation, funding research into brain tumours. danSing were asked to open the event which was held in a huge marquee in the grounds of Ripley Castle. The theme for the evening was La Belle Epoque and Helen arranged French music and songs especially for the occasion. Jane choreographed a Pierrot dance for the danSing intermediates to welcome guests into the marquee. Later in the evening, danSing’s Katie Skinner delighted the audience with a medley of Edith Piaf songs. It was a most magical evening.
Born in a Boombox – 29th March 2011
Following danSing’s Harrogate festival success, the seniors were invited to take part in a charity performance at King James’ School, Knaresborough. The event was produced by Sophie Jackson of Panic Dance Co., Knaresborough and danSing entertained the audience with rock and gospel songs from stage and screen.
Acorn Bollywood Ball – 20th November 2010
danSing helped to raise £47,500 for Harrogate and Ilkley-based fundraisers, the Acorn Committee, at a sell-out Bollywood Ball which was held at Harrogate Ladies’ College. danSing opened the evening with a medley of songs from Bollywood movies. Bhavana Parmar joined creative team, Helen and Jane, to choreograph and costume the songs in authentic Indian style. It was a truly colourful event and Louise Hanen, Chair of the Acorn Committee, said that danSing “are just fabulous”.
Christian Frew in Concert – 12th November 2010
danSing voices were invited to take part in a charity concert at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Hall in Wetherby. The show was presented by Big Big Nights production company and also featured solo singer Cristian Frew and The Riley Jacks. danSing voices performed a variety of pop and musical theatre numbers and combined with Cristian for an inspiring performance of “You Raise Me Up”.
Apprenticeship Awards with Harry Gration and Christa Ackroyd – 20th May 2010
The 2010 Apprenticeship Awards took place at Leeds Town Hall and danSing seniors were invited to open this spectacular event performing “Viva La Vida” from the Town Hall balcony. Later in the evening the group moved onto the stage to perform “Bohemian Rhapsody” to rapturous applause. The awards ceremony was hosted by well-known BBC Look North presenters Harry Gration and Christa Ackroyd.
Charity Concert – Pocklington Arts Centre – 18th May 2010
danSing seniors performed their devised musical theatre piece, Tommy Walker, at a charity event organised by London College of Music Representative, Gina Campbell. The evening was a huge success and danSing impressed the audience at Pocklington Arts Centre Theatre with an imaginative and thought-provoking performance.
Colas Awards with Lenny Henry – 21st May 2009
danSing was selected to perform live on stage with Lenny Henry at the prestigious Celebration of Learning and Skills Awards Ceremony which was staged at the Harrogate International Centre. danSing auditioned alongside undiscovered talent from across Yorkshire and Humberside to win the opportunity to step into the spotlight and perform “O Happy Day” in front of an audience of over 1000. It was an amazing event. danSingers gave an uplifting performance and enjoyed chatting to Lenny!
Come & Sing in Bexley Wing – 28th March 2009
danSing seniors took part in a concert at the new Bexley Wing, St. James’ Hospital, Leeds. The event was organised by co-ordinator, Helen Bye and singing coach, Angela Michel, to help raise funds for the Yorkshire Cancer Centre. danSing’s programme featured group rock numbers, a duet from Laura Bradd and Hannah Rushton, and trio from Hannah, Laura Ferrin and Olivia Jackson. Angela Michel said danSing were “wonderful! So very professional and accomplished!”
Fashion Extravaganza – 12th March 2009
danSing helped to raise £5,500 for the Ripon and Harrogate District Branch of the Alzheimers Society. Seniors and juniors were invited by Louise Hanen, Chair of the Branch, to perform at a Fashion Extravaganza held at Harrogate’s Majestic Hotel. Compere for the evening was Carolyn Hodgson from YTV and danSing delighted the audience with rousing musical theatre and gospel numbers.
Christmas Concert – 13th December 2008
Senior and junior voices combined with the Treble Clef vocal ensemble to present an evening of inspirational music at the Wetherby Church Centre. danSing voices performed a varied programme of festive medleys, solos and duets culminating in gospel version of the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah.
Carol Singing – The Salvation Army – December 2008
danSingers supported the Salvation Army, Wetherby Corps, by singing carols for shoppers in Harrogate Town Centre and performing festive songs during a morning worship service at Wetherby High School.
“Fiesta at Fishers” – 15th March 2008
Both senior and junior danSing groups were invited to take part in this arts and crafts charity event held at St. John Fishers School, Harrogate. The event was opened by the Mayor of Harrogate and danSing students delighted audiences with extracts from West End and Broadway shows.
