Jane Waring

Co-Founder & Director

Jane took her first ballet steps at an early age, enrolling at the Joan Harper School in Headingley aged five. The school was affiliated to the RAD (Royal Academy of Dance) and provided a sound foundation for Jane’s future dance career; she passed all of her early RAD grade examinations with Highly Commended and Honours.

Wishing to widen her range of dance skills, Jane went on to study at the Corrick School of Dance which specialised in modern and tap. The school provided dancers for ‘Junior Showtime’, which was aired weekly on television. For two years Jane appeared regularly as a dancer on ITV.

Aged 13, and already an experienced performer, Jane moved to Harrogate and to the Cynthia Carr School of Dance where she first started entering dance competitions in ballet, modern and Greek winning many trophies and cups. She also took all her major exams here achieving Honours in Greek advanced and Highly Commended in ISTD Modern.

As a performer, Jane danced as one of the cygnets in Swan Lake at the Civic Theatre in Leeds. Whilst a member of the Michal Frazer Dance Company, she danced with Wayne Sleep and attended the Yorkshire Ballet Seminars. This resulted in her being asked to audition for the Royal Ballet but disaster struck before she could achieve this long standing ambition. At the age of fifteen, Jane broke her foot in two places as a result of a horse riding accident and found she could no longer dance on pointe. This forced her to re-think her career path.

Following a period of recovery, Jane’s determination to continue dancing led her to join a local Musical Theatre company first as a performer and then as a choreographer. Her first efforts as a choreographer were received with critical acclaim and Jane soon realised that she had a flair for musical theatre staging. She then went on to use her skills to choreograph productions for many schools, stage schools and for amateur musical theatre production companies in the North of England including Harrogate Operatic Society, Northallerton Operatic Society, Ampleforth College and Boroughbridge High School. Jane also became a member of the Magic Circle staging numerous dances around tricks that were performed in front of the KGB with Foo Mann Soo.

Jane first collaborated with musical director, Helen Leaf, in 1983 when they formed a youth theatre company giving charity shows in and around Harrogate and Wetherby. Though Helen went on to study and work as a conductor and singing teacher in London, they have now joined forces again to direct the highly successful danSing Studio.

Working with Helen, Jane stages individual programmes for the London College of Music Examinations in Music Theatre and achieves outstanding results, many above 90%.

Jane has attained a LAMDA Gold Medal (honours) and is the Speech and Drama representative for the Harrogate Festival Committee.
